# Metaverse Primer
by [Matthew Ball](https://www.matthewball.vc/)

Matthew addresses the _core enablers_ of the Metaverse. What will need to happen, to be unlocked, in order for the Metaverse to become a reality.
- Hardware: basically, we need AR glasses and better VR headsets. This section dramatically underestimates the importance of new input devices.
- Networking: Latency will be a huge challenge. 5G lowers latency, but the _experience_ of latency is also influenced by _bandwidth_, which is determined partially by the size of the message you're trying to send across the wire.
- Compute: Theorizes about [[blockchains are a decentralized computation layer]]. Addresses Cloudflare's strategies and the advent of new GPU chips.
- Virtual Platforms: basically, what will the 3D destinations be?
- Interchange Tools + Standards:
> Yet interchange standards and tools — a broadly-defined category that includes various technical solutions, protocols, formats, and services which enable interoperability — are perhaps the most important aspect of this essay. Without them, there will be no Metaverse — only a more virtual and immersive version of today’s mobile internet and app stores. What’s more, this pale imitation will be far less lucrative, dynamic, and healthy.
